Getting Active In Nature
Earlier this year we launched our new project, Get Active In Nature, made possible thanks to generous funding from Sport England, which supported coaching, equipment and promotional costs. Their backing enabled us to introduce total body walking to our community, giving people a welcoming way to enjoy outdoor exercise while connecting with others in a gentle and supportive environment.
Total body walking is a simple but powerful activity that uses WALX poles to engage the whole body. The poles help people walk with better posture, reduce pressure on joints and increase the amount of muscle used with every step. It is accessible, low impact and suitable for a wide range of abilities, which makes it an ideal way for people to build confidence in movement while enjoying the benefits of being outdoors.
Our walks take place at The Garden of Arden and Stratford‑upon‑Avon Local Nature Reserve, two beautiful green spaces that offer peace, fresh air and a chance to slow down. Being surrounded by nature has become a key part of the project. Participants often tell us how calming it feels to walk among trees, listen to birdsong and take in the changing seasons while moving at a comfortable pace.
Get Active In Nature was created to help reduce social isolation, increase physical activity and support mental health and wellbeing. Many people find traditional exercise settings intimidating, especially gyms, which can feel overwhelming or judgemental. Our total body walking sessions offer something different. They provide a non‑judgemental safe space where people can simply turn up, be themselves and enjoy gentle exercise alongside others who understand and encourage them. As well as walking, we also pause for moments of meditation and simple activities that awaken and lighten the senses.
The group has quickly become a place where people feel supported. Participants cheer each other on, share stories, laugh together and build new friendships. For some, it has been the first time in a long while that they have felt comfortable joining an activity. For others, it has become a weekly highlight that boosts mood, confidence and motivation.
Seeing individuals grow stronger, feel more connected and rediscover the joy of exercise has been incredibly rewarding.
Thanks to Sport England for helping us kick‑start the project with their funding, to Matt McCarthy from Think Active for his guidance and support, to Emma White from WALX for coaching us to deliver the activity, and to our facilitators Mandy Berry and Lisa Gaunt, we’ve been able to open the door to a healthier, more active lifestyle for people who simply needed the right environment to begin.
